The roads in HOP are dirt. Due to the heavy tolls taken by construction vehicles, all residents building a new home are asked to pay a $1750 USD road fee upon completion of the build, to support the necessary road repairs after building.

There is a large and active landslide area that residents must drive through in order to access their homes. Recently, the municipality has taken steps to address the landslide, though it remains an actve and very dangerous area of the road.

Residents continue to pay out of pocket to make improvements to our road system. This includes installing mirrors in tight curves on the road. There is an HOP WhatsApp group that residents use to notify each other about road safety issues.

Every resident is responsible for driving at a safe speed, and owners renting their homes are responsible for emphasizing the importance of safe driving to anyone staying in their home.

Our road system sees a fair amount of traffic on a daily basis, between owners, renters, maintenance and construction workers. A 4×4 vehicle is required for our road


Because we are in Costa Rica, driving on the right side of the road is often viewed as more of a general suggestion than a rule.

As a result, you should always drive cautiously and defensively, especially in the many curves and hills that accompany living on a mountain.

There is a 32kph or 20mph speed limit a 4×4 vehicle is required to reduce wear and tear on the road as much as possible and for safety.
